Novel: Potato People / Character: Sean / Value: Determination
Events: 1) Sean is determined to defend Skullgoragh when the British soldiers came.
2) Sean is also determined to help Patrick get out of Ireland.
Based on the novel ‘Potato People’ written by Angela Wright, the character that portray the value of determination is Sean. He is determined to defend Skullgoragh when the British soldiers came to burn down the cottages. Being the previous landlord of Skullgoragh, he felt like he needed to fight for what is belong to him. He urged the villagers to fight the soldiers although they were just hungry, tired, and frightened people. Sean picked up and old axe and joined the other villagers standing in a row and barricade the soldiers.
Sean is also determined to help Patrick get out of Ireland. After the houses in Skullgoragh was destroyed, he told Patrick to make his way to Cork and meet him up at Three Cats Inn. He also said he woud get the money needed for the journey to America. When they finally meet up, Sean gave the money to Patrick for him to board on a ship called ‘Zeus’. In the end, Patrick found out that Sean was arrested because he killed Mr Graystone and stole Lord Egham’s money just help Patrick get out of Ireland.
In conclusion, the value of determination was clearly portrayed by Sean.
